An individual earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the close of the month rose in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a modest bet of over $32,000.
The identity is unknown. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
But the odds had jumped to eleven percent by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," stated an industry expert.
A small number of other traders also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
A bill presented on recently would prevent federal workers from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with users able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.
Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. But it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.
Insider trading is illegal in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids such activities of any form."
